The new-look Atlantic Coast Conference is transcontinental thanks to additions of Cal, Stanford, and SMU. The trio begin their maiden voyage in the 2024 season and each team new and old in the ACC learned future home and away opponents for next season through 2030.
The Mustangs host Boston College, Florida State, Cal, and Pitt. at Ford Stadium in 2024. They’ll travel for conference games against Duke, Louisville, Stanford, and Virginia. No dates or order of games were released. The Mustangs will play Cal and Stanford every season through at least 2030. Of note, SMU hosts Miami in 2025 and Clemson in 2027.
SMU joined the Southwest Conference in 1918 and remained members until the dissolution of the SWC in 1995. Left out of realignment after nearly a decade of struggles post Death Penalty in the mid-80s, the Mustangs nursed themselves back to relevance through affiliations with the WAC (1996-2004), Conference USA (2005-2012), and the American Athletic Conference (2013-present).
The move to the ACC represented a return to the main table for SMU – much like the move to the Big 12 for TCU in 2012. Sure, the Mustangs left $200 million on the table in media rights to do it, but what was never yours can’t technically be lost. SMU is not short on money and the athletic department raised $100 million in one week this fall to counteract the future hole in media right money.
The migration also coincides with sustained success on the field for the first time since the 1980s. The football program won five games or fewer in all but one season (1997) from 1989 through 2005. The eight games won in 2009 were the most the Death Penalty. The 10-win 2019 campaign is the only double-digit win season for SMU since 1984.
The current team is 6-2 and bowl eligible for the fifth year in a row and sixth time in the last seven seasons. Rhett Lashlee’s squad is 6-2 and undefeated in conference with games against Rice and North Texas next.
