Rori Harmon is the best basketball player in the state of Texas. The Cy Creek star has quickly become one of most dominant two-way players in the nation entering her junior season and Texas’ has emerged as the team to beat under head coach Vic Schaefer thanks in part to her rise.

Harmon becomes the second player from Texas women’s basketball to grace the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball, joining former Longhorn Brooke McCarthy but she’s the first solo cover subject from the women’s program. The reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and All-Big 12 First-Teamer, Harmon is the linchpin of Texas, who were recently named the preseason favorites to win the conference this season.

The cover photo was taken by Austin-based photographer and University of Texas graduate, Angela Wang. The cover story, on Harmon’s career and her emergence at Texas, was penned by Dave Campbell’s newest college writer, Carter Yates.

“Rori Harmon is a subject I’ve wanted to spotlight ever since her breakout freshman season at Texas,” Texas Basketball managing editor Ishmael Johnson said. “To say this was a cover I’ve long looked forward to eventually shooting is an understatement.”

Last season, Texas Basketball unveiled its first-ever gatefold cover featuring Fairfield High School’s McKinna and Shadasia Brackens.

This year, we continue that new tradition this time with the top prospect in the country for the class of 2025, Aaliyah Chavez from Lubbock Monterey. Chavez is arguably the most exciting athlete right now in Texas already breaking Monterey’s all-time scoring mark after her sophomore season averaging just under 30 points per game and leading the program to a regional final appearance.

“This was the biggest no-brainer I think I’ve had since coming up with a cover subject,” Johnson said. “Chavez is a star not only to the South Plains but the state of Texas and soon the entire country will realize the generational talent that she is as she continues to amplify her national presence.”

Chavez becomes the first solo high school athlete over subject on the gatefold cover of the basketball magazine. The photo was taken by Annie Rice of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, shooting her first cover for the magazine. The coverstory, on what Chavez means to the South Plains and her national breakout, was penned by Stephen Garcia, also of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The 2023-24 edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball also becomes the first in our publication’s history to feature two female cover subjects both shot by two female photographers.
