Forgive still-mourning Oilers fan if we share a collective tear of joy Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Houston Cougars start the 2023 campaign with a game against UTSA. The newly minted Big 12 members plan to honor the city of Houston by donning the famous baby blue – the national colors of Houston, TX – and red made my famous by Earl Campbell and Bum Phillips.

This time, it is Matthew Golden and Dana Holgorsen. Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman announced it to the team on Monday. The Cougars are wearing the iconic blue jersey with a red outline surrounding the word “Houston” in a white script. The helmets are white with a blue stripe down the middle surrounded by flanking red stripes with “Houston” in script on the side. Even the endzones in TDECU Stadium will be painted light blue.

The Houston Oilers were founded in 1960 and began as an AFL team, winning the league’s first two championships in 1960 and 1961. They haven’t won another title since, including since 1996 rebrand as the Tennessee Titans. The Oilers joined the NFL  in 1970.
