Katy (1-0) at Humble Atascocita (1-0): It’s a short week for Katy as the Tigers make the trip north of the Beltway to Turner Stadium where Atascocita awaits in a top 10 matchup in Class 6A.
Fifth-ranked Katy jumped out to a 27-3 lead on Clear Springs after three quarters but had to hold off a late charge for a 34-22 win. The positives for Katy were that the offense looked like its old selves despite some heavy graduation losses at the skill positions. RB Romel Jordan ran for 140 yards and a touchdown and Katy QB’s Gunner Nelson and Jackson Franklin combined to throw three touchdown passes.
The negative was in the second half Katy’s secondary showed signs of some of the struggles that plagued them late in the year in 2022. Those struggles allowed Clear Springs to get back in the game.
Atascocita went on the road last week and took care of business against a solid Dickinson squad, 46-21. QB Zion Brown tossed a pair of touchdowns and RB Tory Blaylock ran for two scores to pace the explosive Eagles offense. Atascocita’s young defense showed flashes of strong play a week ago, but they’ll have to be at an elite level to slow down a punishing Katy ground game.
These two played a close one last year with Katy winning by seven. I expect another down to-the-wire matchup, but in these pick’em type matchups you’ve got to go with the Katy Tigers and their winning pedigree.
