The first game of the Tom Landry Classic features defending Division II state champion DeSoto visiting Allen Eagle Stadium.
It’s been an offseason of some transition for Allen as it lost Oklahoma commit QB Mike Hawkins, Jr. to a transfer to Frisco Emerson. The big questions for Allen will be on offense as the Eagles try and settle on a signal-caller; the Eagles are solid at the other spots and have good depth at running back and on the offensive line. Four-star DE Zina Umeozulu is the headliner for an Allen defense that expects to be improved.
DeSoto comes into the season with a lot of expectations and buzz after bringing home a state title. As always, Claude Mathis’ squad has some big-time talent led by junior RB Deondrae “Tiger” Riden and freshman sensation WR Ethan “Boobie” Faster. Senior D.J. Bailey brings exceptional arm talent, good decision making and experience to the QB spot, while the offensive line expects to be improved. DeSoto’s defense has playmakers at all three levels with DL Jason Douglas, LB Brandon Booker (Stanford commit), DB’s Mario Buford (Nebraska commit) and Sael Reyes leading the way.
Allen keeps this game a lot closer than most think, but DeSoto’s got a few too many weapons. The defending state champs are going to load the box and dare Allen to throw the ball.
Stepp’s Pick: DeSoto by 11
