COLLEGE STATION -- It was Round Rock's first trip to the Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament since 2019, and man did the Dragons make it count.
Round Rock completed a perfect 8-0 week with a 26-13 win over A&M Consolidated to win the Division I crown on Saturday.
Quarterback Mason Cochran led the charge for Round Rock throwing four touchdown passes in the title game, but his biggest impact may have been on defense when he picked off a pass in the end zone just before halftime to preserve a 14-6 lead.
“I came in on third down and I heard the QB yell out a couple of things to his receivers so I had an idea what the play might look like," he said. "So I told my guys what I thought be coming so I told my guys and I was in the right spot."
After dueling touchdowns passes to open the game by Cochran and A&M Consolidated QB Will Hargett, Round Rock grabbed a 14-6 lead on Cochran’s second touchdown pass of the first half, this one to Hayden Hnath.
The Dragons opened the lead to 20-6 early in the second half by getting a stop on the opening drive of the second half and then marching down and getting a score.
A&M Consolidated would answer back on its second drive of the half has Hargett connected with Payton Bjork for a score to cut the lead to 20-13.
Cochran’s final touchdown pass of the game on the ensuing drive would put the game away for Round Rock with just under two minutes left making the score 26-13.
“This is what we worked for and why we are here," Cochran said. "I trust my guys to go make plays and we got it done, it feels great.
Round Rock’s defense, led by Notre Dame commit DB Leonard Moore, was stellar all weekend allowing just under a 17- points per game.
