The Miles Bulldogs were again the kings of Division III in Texas 7-on-7 as they finished up an 8-0 weekend with a hard-fought 22-20 win in the championship game over a tough-minded Poth squad. The Miles defense came up in several key moments in the win, forcing three straight four-second calls on Poth on the final drive of the game to preserve the win.
Poth, who posted an 0-3 mark on Thursday, rallied with four straight wins on Friday to advance to the title game in surprising fashion. The Pirates jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the first drive of the game as quarterback Colin Ramzinski connected with Gabriel Silansky for a touchdown and the ensuing two-point conversion catch by Aiden DeHoyos gave Poth the early edge.
Miles would answer with a touchdown and two-point conversion of its own as QB Hayven Book connected with Keagan Walz for the score.
The biggest play of the game came on the next drive as Miles LB Devin Medina stepped in front of a Ramzinski pass and made a one-handed interception, which he returned eight yards for a TD.
“I saw the out-route developing and I just read it and jumped the route and was able to hang on to it,” Medina said.
Poth fought back before halftime as Ramzinski and DeHoyos connected for a 41-yard touchdown pass to make it 15-14 after the two-point conversion failed.
Miles would open the second half with a score as a tipped pass would go the Bulldogs way as Dalton Fischer would be on the receiving end of a tipped pass from Book to score on a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-14.
The defenses would start to take over from there after Poth turned it over on downs.
DeHoyos would give the ball back to his offense for Poth after picking off a Book pass and the Pirates would cut the lead to just two as Ramzinski connected with a touchdown pass. Miles would turn it over on downs on their next drive as they tried to milk the clock, but Poth would be unable to take the lead as time expired with the three straight three and outs as time expired.
“We worked really hard all summer to get this point, we were tired but our conditioning kicked in,” Medina said. “I feel like we had a good year last year and this experience is going to help us in the fall.”
Miles did not lose a game in 7-on-7 competition all summer. The Bulldogs' last 7-on-7 loss came in pool play in last year’s state tournament.
