New Caney head coach Travis Reeve will be named the next athletic director/head football coach at El Campo High School, pending board approval by El Campo ISD on Monday evening.

Reeve replaces Chad Worrell, who departed for the head coaching position at Class 5A Burleson High last week.

“The chance to get back in a one-school town was really appealing when El Campo opened,” Reeve said. “We are going to miss New Caney. The people here have been fantastic to us and we have a ton of great memories. I really appreciate the New Caney ISD administration, parents and community for all the support of the program and our family. "It's been great and we made so many good friends here.”

Reeve, a native of Victoria, is best known for his successful run at nearby Cuero from 2012-2019, which included a 4A-Division II state championship in 2018. He also led the Gobblers to the state semifinals in 2015 and regional final appearances in 2016 and 2017. He posted a 76-29 record in his eight seasons at Cuero.

Reeve has spent the last three seasons at Class 6A New Caney where he posted a 23-11 mark, including an 11-1 record in 2022.

Prior to taking over at Cuero in 2012 for his first head coaching job, Reeve spent time as an assistant at San Antonio Churchill, Cuero, San Antonio MacArthur, Plano West and his alma mater Victoria High where he got his start in coaching in 1998.

Reeve takes over an El Campo program that has a long tradition of winning and success. The Ricebirds were 9-3 in 2022 and lost in the area playoffs.

“The chance to be closer to home was definitely a factor," he said. "El Campo has lots of tradition and success. I’ve always been impressed with El Campo’s kids; they always played hard, were tough kids and have tons of pride in being a Ricebird."

New Caney ISD is expected to post the New Caney High job quickly. The district’s third high school, West Fork High School, is already open and will be counted in October’s realignment snapshot. So although New Caney is losing some talent, it is possible the Eagles move back to Class 5A in the next UIL realignment.
