College football executives are looking into implementing new clock changes to shorten the number of plays in-game, citing player safety and game length.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, high-ranking members in college football have been reviewing four rules aimed at reducing overall game time.
- Banning consecutive timeouts (Icing kickers)
- No more untimed downs to end the first and third quarters from defensive penalties
- Continuing to run the clock after first downs except for inside of two minutes during either half
- Running the clock following an incomplete pass once the ball is spotted for the next down by the referee
The latter two changes are considered more drastic than the former with the fourth being considered the most controversial change they’d be making to the game, according to the report. Dellenger suggests these changes, if any, would be implemented this fall for the 2023 season.
