On Wednesday morning at the advice of his physicians and his family Flower Mound Marcus head coach Kevin Atkinson made the difficult decision to retire from coaching. Coach Atkinson the past three years has battled a number of health conditions including an ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease and a stroke in 2020. “It is extremely difficult to walk away from a profession my family and I both dearly love, especially at a place I consider my ‘dream job.’ I’ve never felt like I was ‘going to work’ a single day in my career,” said Atkinson.
“Having the opportunity to finish my career here at Marcus where it all began in 1992 with my wife Chrissy is an incredible story. I have had the honor of speaking into the lives of countless players, coached alongside great coaches, and served with strong, supportive administrators. I am grateful for all those moments along the path that prepared me to return to Marcus – to return home,” said Atkinson in a statement.
Atkinson retires with 21-seasons under his belt and a record of 126-100 with stops at Keller, Denton and finally at Flower Mound Marcus where he’s spent the past six seasons. 2019 was Atkinson’s best season as a head coach as he led the Marauders to an 11-2 mark and a regional semifinal appearance, he led Keller to the area playoffs in 2003 and led Denton to an area round appearance in 2014 and to the regional semifinals in 2015. Coach Atkinson also led Marcus to an unbeaten regular season in 2020.
Lewisville ISD has yet to set a timeline on the search for Atkinson’s replacement, but you can expect the job will draw plenty of statewide and national interest once the job officially gets posted.
