Stephen F. Austin wide receiver Graylan Spring has died from injuries sustained during a motor vehicle crash north of Corrigan on Friday afternoon, according to a statement from the athletic department on Sunday evening. Former Lumberjack baseball player Micah McAfoose also died in the accident.

SFA will hold a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Homer Bryce Stadium. The University indicated that all are welcome to attend.

According to a press release from the Corrigan Police Department, Spring was a passenger with McAfoose driving a 2007 Nissan Versa south on U.S. Highway 59 north of Corrigan when an 18-wheeler traveling north made a left-hand turn from Plant Road and failed to yield to the Nissan. The car became trapped under the trailer.

According to the release, McAfoose died from his injuries upon impact while Spring was airlifted to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe, where he was listed in critical condition on Friday.

"Our hearts are broken at the loss of Graylan, and our prayers go out to the amazing Spring family," SFA coach Colby Carthel said in a statement. "What a tremendous loss for those of us fortunate to know Graylan. He was a true champion, both on and off the field, and his legacy will live on forever within the Lumberjack football program.

Vandegrift football described Spring in a tweet on Sunday afternoon as “Always smiling, a friend to everyone, truly inspiring to anyone that knew (him),” and as a “fierce competitor.” 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Micah and Graylan," SFA Athletic Director Ryan Ivey said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of these two individuals who were full of life and had a bright future in front of them. We will continue to honor and remember their memory for years to come. We will continue to work with our medical staff and mental health professionals to ensure that our student-athletes have all of the support that they may need during this difficult time."

The University said in a statement on the passing of McAfoose that counselors will be available to students at the SFA Health and Wellness Hub for emergency walk-ins on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. SFA faculty and staff can receive assistance by contacting the SFA Employee Assistance Program at 1 (800) 346-3549.
