Dr. Susan Elza, the athletic director of the University Interscholastic League, will resign to become the new chief of staff for the Nebraska Cornhuskers under new coach Matt Rhule, sources tell Dave Campbell's Texas Football. The deal is expected to become official next week.
Elza would leave the UIL after more than seven years as the head of athletics for the governing body of Texas interscholastic activities. Before her hire at the UIL in September 2015 — the first woman to hold the position — Elza was athletic director for Northwest ISD and assistant athletic director for Allen ISD. An accomplished softball coach, Elza spent several successful seasons on the diamond at both Allen and Garland.
Elza would be the second high-profile member of the Texas high school football world to make the leap to Rhule's Huskers — longtime Arlington Martin coach Bob Wager joined the Nebraska staff as tight ends and assistant special teams coach in late December. Rhule also hired Garret McGuire, who played for him during his successful tenure at Baylor, as wide receivers coach; McGuire is the son of Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire, whom Rhule hired from his spot as Cedar Hill head coach in 2017.
