Success brings about suitors. TCU is the latest example. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is reportedly closing in on becoming Clemson’s next offensive coordinator. Riley, the younger brother of USC’s head coach, Lincoln Riley, was the architect and play caller for a Horned Frogs offense that averaged over 40 points a game during the regular season.
Riley followed Sonny Dykes over from SMU after the 2021 season. Dykes praised Riley’s patience and maturity multiple times throughout TCU’s run to the College Football Playoff. His offense scored 51 points in the win over Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl. Quarterback Max Duggan was second in the Heisman Trophy voting under his tutelage.
TCU must now replace Dykes as offensive coordinator. Working with Dykes should be attractive considering the 2022 success and that the guy working as his offensive coordinator before Riley – Rhett Lashlee – is the current head coach at SMU.
Larry Williams at Tiger Illustrated was first to report.
