Arlington – One play to make to win the state championship. It’s what every player dreams of being able do for their team.
Cort Lowry got that chance, and didn't disappoint.
Franklin's kicker nailed a 20-yard field goal as time expired to give the Lions a 17-14 victory over Brock in the 3A Division I UIL State Championship at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.
To say points were at a premium would be an understatement. This was a rough and tumble game where running and defense reigned supreme. Both teams had long drives that ended with no points.
It wouldn’t be until just before halftime that there were finally points put on the board. It would be a Jayden Jackson 4-yard rushing touchdown that would get the Lions the lead before halftime. Then after Brock lost a fumble just outside the redzone, they would force a turnover to get it right back. Reid Watkins made sure that they would take advantage of that opportunity with his 22-yard touchdown run to tie things up.
The drama continued into the fourth quarter, as Brock was driving towards the endzone once again. The Eagles looked to their passing game as Tyler Moody completed a 12-yard pass to Brewster, but the eventual defensive MVP Fragiel Owens had other plans. He forced the ball out and then took it back 64 yards for the touchdown to grab the lead halfway through the fourth quarter for Franklin.
On the next Brock drive, Moody was able to find the trusty Brett Tutter who ran it for the touchdown to tie things back up in the fourth quarter.
Then came the penultimate drive for Franklin where they marched all the way down the field to set up the Lowry game winning field goal. Earning Franklin back-to-back state titles.
The rushing attack of Franklin was on display all night with the offensive MVP Jackson leading the way with 146 yards and one touchdown averaging 6.1 yard per carry. He wasn’t alone as Bryson Washington helped carry the load with his 89 yards. Brayden Youree also came up big on defense with his sack, interception, and five tackles.
Watkins was the focal point of the Brock offense finishing the night with 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground while also leading the team in tackles with 12. Moody had some success through the air with 133 yards and a touchdown.
