The Texas sub-FBS ranks may soon be expanding, with Schreiner expected to soon begin a football program, according to The Kerr County Lead. Schreiner University President Charlie McCormick gave the Kerrville City Council a presentation on the university’s plan to expand earlier in October.
McCormick expects the university’s board of regents to finalize the plan soon, which includes funding for a football stadium and a track and field complex. Schreiner would also add a women’s swimming program.
The Mountaineers would compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which seems likely to sponsor football beginning in 2024. Current SCAC members that sponsor football are Trinity, Texas Lutheran, Southwestern, and Austin College. All four of those schools are affiliated with other conferences for football.
McMurry announced it accepted an invitation to join the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference before the Fall 2024 season. The War Hawks are affiliate members of the SCAC for swimming and esports.
The SCAC will become the 29th conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2024, leaving only three bids for at-large schools, independent schools, and conferences that don’t meet the minimum number of teams required (six) for an automatic bid.

If TLU and Austin College depart the ASC following the 2023 season, the conference will have five teams that play football and will be below the minimum number of teams (six) needed for an automatic bid to the playoffs. Therefore, the conference will try and add another member that sponsors football or risk losing their automatic bid if they don’t add a school before the 2026 season.
