The halfway point for seven of the 12 FBS programs in Texas passed after Week 6 of the 2022 college football season. That means it is time to build the mid-season team of the Lone Star State. The list contains players from 10 of the 12 FBS schools, and it is built mostly on mid-season stats and some on team results.
TCU (5-0) and Texas (4-2) lead the way with four selections each. We took liberties with positions so there aren’t necessarily 11 players on offense and defense. Rather than choosing individual offensive linemen, we chose to pick a unit, and the best offensive line unit in Texas through six weeks of the season belongs to the Horned Frogs. UTSA was third on the list with three selections.
Mid-Season Offensive Player of the Year
QB Frank Harris – UTSA
The Roadrunners are 4-2 and favored to win a second straight C-USA championship thanks to the talented right arm, and legs, of the senior quarterback. The local product entered the season as the C-USA Offensive Player of the Year, and he’s on track to prove that correct. Harris has completed 68.9 percent of his passes for 1,997 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s also ran for 254 yards and five touchdowns while averaging five yards a carry. And he’s done it without multiple starting offensive linemen and a running game that struggled in the non-conference schedule. My apologies to Max Duggan, who has really only played in four full games compared to six for Harris.
Mid-Season Defensive Player of the Year
LB Jaylan Ford – Texas
Advanced analytics consider the Texas defense to be one of the best in the nation. The group is only allowing 17.83 points per game. The overtime loss to Texas Tech is the only time a team has scored more than 30 points for the Longhorns. Not a bad turnaround from a historically bad defensive performance in 2021. The emergence of Ford as a real consistent presence at the second level is a main reason why. Ford is 17th in the nation with 58 tackles. He also has a sack and a forced fumble. He’s recorded double-digit tackles in five of Texas’ six games.
Mid-Season Offensive Freshman of the Year
RB Richard Reese – Baylor
The 5-9, 175-pound true freshman from Bellville High School emerged as the no. 1 running back for the Bears through the first half of the season. The three-star prospect is already overdelivering on his recruiting grade. Reese took over as the starter in the third game of the year. Since then, he’s rushed for 106.3 yards a game in three starts. Reese has six touchdown runs and six catches out of the backfield. He’s averaging 5.55 yards a carry. Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks is also a deserving winner.
Mid-Season Defensive Freshman of the Year
CB Denver Harris – Texas A&M
Breaking into the starting lineup at a Power Five school as a true freshman takes a special player. Doing it in a secondary that’s loaded with upperclassmen with NFL profiles is downright elite. Harris is that dude. He’s already locking no. 1 receivers down in the SEC like he’s still playing at Galena Park North Shore. He’s lived up to the five-star status and looks like a future contender for the Thorpe Award if he can show maturity off the field.
