Texas enters the 2022 version of the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma as a heavy favorite, and that line might increase to double-digits with news that redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers is healthy enough to start for the Longhorns on Saturday. A source inside the Texas football program confirmed a Pete Thamel report that Ewers is expected to start in Week 6. The Southlake Carroll product was knocked out of the Week 2 loss to Alabama with a hurt clavicle. Saturday will be just his third collegiate start in his short career after not attempting a single pass during his freshman season at Ohio State.
The Longhorns are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play. Lake Travis product Hudson Card played well in relief of Ewers. Card improved each week as a starter. He completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 923 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception. Ewers has two touchdown passes and an interception on 36 passing attempts. The Longhorns might make a few more mistakes with the inexperienced Ewers at the helm, but he does make the Texas offense more explosive. Ewers averaged 10 yards a completion compared to 8.6 for Card.
