It’s a big showdown in the Big Country as last year’s 2A-Division I state runner-up Hawley takes a big step up in weight class taking on 3A-Division I Jim Ned.

Jim Ned, the 2020 3A-Division I state champions, posted a strong 12-1 mark a year ago, but the playoffs ended in unceremonious fashion as the Indians were blasted by Brock in the regional semifinals.

Gone is a strong senior class led by some good skill talent, but Jim Ned does return seven on defense so expect the defense to lead the way while the young offense finds their footing.

After a run to the state title game, Hawley is loaded with experience on both sides of the ball. QB Rodey Hooper has plenty of weapons with RB Austin Cumpton, WR’s Diontay Ramon and Chandlin Myers and two-way playmaker Will Scott.

Hawley’s front-line talent is better than Jim Ned at the moment; but can the Bearcats hold off a Jim Ned surge in the second half?

With Hawley not being real beat-up from a tough non-district slate, the Bearcats hold off Jim Ned and get a statement win to open the season.

Stepp’s Pick: Hawley by 3
