A trio of programs from the Lone Star State were ranked inside the initial AP Top 25 Poll of the 2022 college football season. Texas A&M is the top-ranked team in the state at sixth, while Baylor checks in at No. 10 and Houston sits at 24th. The Texas Longhorns, who were ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll, were just outside of the AP Top 25 at 27th. No other state in the country had more than two teams ranked inside either poll. The Lone Star State has three representatives on the AP Poll and four on the Coaches Poll. Texas A&M was ranked highest on both lists.

The 2022 college football season begins with a limited slate of Week 0 games on Aug. 27 with North Texas traveling to El Paso to face UTEP that night. The season kicks off for most programs during Week 1, which falls on the first weekend of September. Texas A&M finished 8-4 in 2021 and is ranked inside the top 10 of most preseason rankings despite no clear answers at the quarterback position and youth in the front seven of its defense. Baylor, the defending Big 12 champions, is breaking in a new quarterback and skill position players on both sides of the ball. Houston looks poised to make a run at an AAC championship with the return of quarterback Clayton Tune and defensive coordinator Doug Belk.
