Four of Texas’ 12 FBS programs announced move-in dates for their new conferences on Friday afternoon. The University of Houston is set to pay the American Athletic Conference $18 million dollars to move to the Big 12 in July 2023. Cincinnati and UCF are paying the same amount to join the Big 12 early. 

The Big 12, which is scheduled to lose Texas and Oklahoma in 2025, will proceed with 14 schools until then unless those two programs negotiate an early release. Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU are remaining in the Big 12. 

The move of Houston, Cincinnati and UCF allowed in-state Conference USA programs – UTSA, North Texas, and Rice – to move to the American in July of 2023. UTEP is the only in-state Conference USA program to stay behind. SMU remains in the American. There’s no announced buy out for the C-USA schools to leave early for the American. Texas State is remaining in the Sun Belt while Sam Houston is moving to Conference USA from the FCS level in July 2023.
