ARLINGTON – The Wright brothers made history by flying. The Ringling Bros. started a circus. Kurt and Kyle Busch drive in circles at a fast pace. The Brooks brothers – Dalton and Doug – ran over, and around, competition for the better part of three years for Shiner High School, capturing a second consecutive state championship in a 47-12 win over Hawley in the Class 2A Division I state championship game at AT&T Stadium on Wednesday night. 

Doug, a senior, finished his four-year varsity career at Shiner with a 53-3 record. Dalton, a junior, is 32-1 on the varsity level. Shiner is on a 30-game winning streak dating back to November 2019, thanks in large part to the two-way efforts of the Brothers Brooks. The duo combined for 63 of the 90 offensive touchdowns (70 percent) scored by Shiner’s offense leading into the state championship game.  

"Honestly, it hasn't set in yet," Doug said of the two state championships alongside his brother Dalton. "I know when it does set it, it is going to hit me like a truck." 

The first half was a perfect illustration of the Brooks’ dominance. Shiner ran 34 plays en route to a 21-12 lead. Dalton and Doug touched the ball on 33 of those 34 plays, gaining 289 of the team’s 303 first-half yards. The other play resulted in a fumble lost after a pass completion. Dalton ran the ball 20 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns, adding three receptions for 63 yards. Doug ran the ball 10 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. 

Doug ended the game with 210 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries to win Offensive Player of the Game. Dalton carried the ball 31 times for 196 yards and a trio of touchdowns. 

Oh, and the duo plays defense. Doug, a defensive tackle, entered the game with 93 tackles and two sacks. Dalton, a safety, racked up 144 tackles and three interceptions prior to the state championship game. He added another pick in the win over Hawley. The duo was credited with six tackles in the win. 

The duo is used to the big stage. Doug was the Defensive Player of the Game in the 2020 championship tilt against Post. He was so impressive that UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor extended Doug an offer after watching the state title game on television. Dalton was the Offensive Player of the Game in that same contest. Shiner’s only loss with the two on the field at the same time was to Refugio in the third round of the playoffs back in 2019. Two 15-0 seasons concluding with state championships followed. 

"My freshman year, I realized I only had three years left to play with him," Dalton said. "I've never taken one of those days together for granted. He doesn't let me go anywhere without him, and I don't let him go anywhere without me. We're real close, and these times are special." 

Colleges have taken note, which isn’t always true at the Class 2A level. Doug holds offers from UTSA, Houston, Colorado State, and Army. The 6-0, 280-pound wrecking ball projects as a defensive tackle at the next level. Dalton, his younger brother, holds over 20 offers with programs such as Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame in the mix. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was on hand to watch Shiner in the state semifinals last weekend. 

Doug finished the year with 1,856 yards and 28 touchdowns. Dalton accounted for 2,612 yards and 39 rushing toucdowns.
