Lewisville Hebron (5-4, 5-1) at Lewisville (8-1, 5-1): Two Lewisville ISD teams will battle it out for positioning and potentially a District 6-6A title at historic Goldsmith Stadium. Hebron beat Plano West 47-35 as wide receiver Koda Bridges had a record-breaking night. Bridges broke the single season receiving yards record with his 98-yard, one touchdown effort. Running backs Fred Ware and Lane Haworth combined for 228 yards and three touchdowns for the Hawks. Lewisville finally got a blemish on their undefeated season as Flower Mound Marcus beat the Farmers 40-27. Lewisville couldn’t keep up the scoring as quarterback Ethan Terrell threw two interceptions. The Oregon State running back commit Damien Martinez had 30 carries for 209 yards and one touchdown. Texas wide receiver commit Armani Winfield had six receptions for one touchdown. There are three teams with a 5-1 record in district 6-6A. Marcus holds the tiebreaker against both of these teams and faces Plano East in their season closer. I expect Lewisville to rebound and hope Plano East can bring the upset. DCTF Intern Joshua Price’s Pick: Lewisville by 10
The Woodlands (7-2, 4-0) vs The Woodlands College Park (7-2, 3-1): It’s a battle of The Woodlands in 13-6A as The Woodlands High can lock up an undefeated district run with a win over College Park. A year ago, College Park stunned TWHS to earn the 13-6A and their first ever win over the Highlanders. Last week after falling behind early 10-0 to Conroe High, The Woodlands woke up and rolled to a 45-32 win. RB JoBarre Reed rushed for three touchdowns and 100 yards, while QB Mabrey Mettauer accounted for 359 yards of offense and three touchdowns to lead an explosive attack. College Park got a scare last week but escaped with a hard fought 14-10 win over a scrappy Conroe Oak Ridge bunch. QB ty Buckmon led the Cavaliers on a pair of second half scoring drives throwing a touchdown pass and running for another touchdown. The Woodlands hasn’t forgotten what happened last year and College Park will have their attention, the Highlanders are too explosive this year and will walk away with the district title. Stepp’s Pick: The Woodlands by 14
Amarillo Tascosa (8-1, 5-0) at Lubbock Coronado (5-4, 4-1): It’s a big Thursday night on the South Plains as Amarillo Tascosa heads south on I-27 to try and secure an outright district title against a dangerous Lubbock Coronado squad that is better than their record indicates. Tascosa is fresh off a bye week after they demolished Lubbock Monterey in their most recent outing 60-18. The Rebels option based offense is headlined by TCU commit RB Major Everhart, but this is a team that will rotate as many as ten different backs to throw at a defense and the straw that stirs the drink in this offense is QB B.T. Daniel, as he goes, so goes Tascosa. Everhart hauled in two touchdown passes from Daniel and RB/DB La’Travion Brown had a touchdown run and pick six in the first half that staked Tascosa out to the huge lead. Lubbock Coronado ran out to a big 34-7 lead and held off a late Monterey rally last week in the Mustangs 41-27 victory. RB Antonio Malone ran for two touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass on a trick play. Coronado needs to withstand the early blitz that Tascosa typically puts on teams, Tascosa races out to quick starts and typically never looks back, if the Mustangs can withstand the early storm they’ll be in the mix in this showdown out west. Stepp’s Pick: Amarillo Tascosa by 13
Denton Ryan (8-1, 7-0) at Frisco Lone Star (8-1, 7-0): The battle for the 5-5A Division I title is here. Two teams that suffered early season losses and have been on a tear since look to duke it out for bragging rights and the top seed in the playoffs. Denton Ryan stymied Frisco Independence with a 41-7 victory. The Raiders’ defense limited Independence to 101 yards and forced two interceptions. Running back Khalib Hicks ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Frisco Lone Star put up 515 yards of offense as they put down the Colony 49-6. Oklahoma State commit Garrett Rangle has continued to shine since his injury, throwing for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Boise State running back commit Ashton Jeanty has been on a tear this season and added to it with 232 yards and three touchdowns. Lone Star will look to expose the youth of Ryan in this matchup. If they continue to rally behind Rangle and Jeanty, the Rangers should outpace the Raiders offensively. But Ryan has shown they can compete in big games, we are going with the upset in this one. DCTF Intern Joshua Price’s Pick: Frisco Lone Star by 3
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (8-1, 6-1) at Victoria West (6-3, 5-2): One of the big stunners in the state last week was Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial not only losing to Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, but getting run out of the building in a 39-7 loss. The Eagles scored on the first play of the game, but then could generate nothing else all night and even gifted Flour Bluff a couple of safeties as well, it was simply put a forgettable performance. Now can the Eagles respond this week as a loss in this one means VMHS won’t be able to host a playoff game. Victoria West has clinched a playoff spot, but a win in this one can improve the Warriors playoff standing. West rolled past Corpus Christi Carroll last week 54-28 as RB Kibreante Williams ran for 163 yards and two scores, sophomore QB Braden Luedeker threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns, while WR Dion Green ran for a touchdown and had two touchdowns receiving. If Vets plays to their paper, the Eagles win this one comfortably and remain as the top seed and earn a share of the district title, but if there’s a hangover effect from last week Victoria West is fully capable of pulling the upset. Stepp’s Pick: Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial by 15
Brenham (7-2, 6-0) at Leander Rouse (8-1, 6-0): The 13-5A Division II title is on the line in Leander as Brenham takes the long trip west to try and take down defending district champion Leander Rouse. The Cubs rolled past Bastrop Cedar Creek 58-6 as QB Steven Stackhouse ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as Brenham raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead and cruised in the second half playing mostly backups. Rouse got pushed in a major way but upstart Leander Glenn, but the Raiders were able to pull out a 24-21 win as Mason Johnson’s field goal with just over four minutes left in the game proved to be the difference for Rouse. RHS ran out to a 21-0 halftime lead on the strength of two EJ Moore touchdown runs and then had to hang on for dear life in the second half as Glenn rallied to tie the game at 21 before Johnson’s game winning kick. Brenham’s speed will give Rouse some troubles, but if Rouse can get the passing game going at home they should be able to lure Brenham into a track meet. Stepp’s Pick: Leander Rouse by 6
