UPDATE (Aug. 2): Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers is forgoing his senior season and enrolling early at Ohio State, according to a report from Inside Texas. He confirmed the news on Twitter.
"This is not just a financial decision; this is about what is best for my football career," Ewers wrote in the post. "At 18, and with one final class about to be completed to earn my high-school degree, I feel it's time to get the jump on my college career that is available to me."
Ewers is expected to enroll this week at Ohio State in time for fall practice, where he could potentially compete for the starting quarterback job. The Buckeyes lost starter Justin Fields to the NFL, creating an open quarterback battle. Second-year player C.J. Stroud is the presumed favorite over Jack Miller.
If Ewers were to win the job, he would team up with former Texas high school great wide receivers Garrett Wilson (Lake Travis) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Rockwall), along with many other Texans on the roster.
Moving to Columbus early would open the door for Ewers to sign endorsement deals that could reach the six-figure mark this fall. One such deal, reported on by Yahoo Sports, would be a deal with money and equity in the beverage company Holy Kombucha. UIL rules prevent Ewers from being able to sign such a deal.
The move is a blow to Southlake Carroll, which played for a state championship in Class 6A Division I just last season. The Dragons were picked No. 3 in the preseason 6A rankings, behind only defending state champions Austin Westlake and Katy.
Original story: Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers is considering skipping his senior year of high school to enroll early at Ohio State, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.
As the consensus No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2022, Ewers could sign endorsement deals that clear seven figures at Ohio State. Academically, Ewers is far enough ahead of the game that he could graduate early and be eligible for the 2021 season.
"I don't have a final decision made quite yet," Ewers told Pete Thamel. "I'm leaning toward leaving and going up to Ohio, just so I don't have to deal with UIL stuff and can get comfortable with Ohio and Columbus and start to learn."
Ewers would be disallowed from signing any of these deals under UIL rules, which were set forth by state legislation. He would not be allowed to sign any endorsement deals until he completed all of his high school competition, which likely wouldn't be until he enrolled in January at Ohio State.
The rising senior led Southlake Carroll to the state championship game under third-year head coach Riley Dodge, a former state champion quarterback with the Dragons himself. Texas Football magazine picked Southlake Carroll third in the preseason 6A rankings, behind only state champions Katy and Austin Westlake.
