Regional Outlook

A year ago Lindale surprised some (not this guy) by taking home the Region III title and once again the teams out of East Texas in 9-4A Division I expect to be in the mix for the regional title. Chapel Hill, who finished in fourth place a year ago and made a run to the regional semifinals may be poised to overtake a Lindale squad that took heavy losses at the skill positions. Kilgore, who fell to Lindale in the regional finals a year ago has a new coach and suffered some big graduation losses, but the Bulldogs should get third over an underrated Palestine squad.

Down in Southeast Texas it’s a two-horse race in 10-4A Division I as Livingston battles with Huffman for the district title, a year ago Livingston won the district but fell in the first round of the playoffs to Chapel Hill. Huffman-Hargrave finished second, but got to the regional semifinals, which tells you that the battles early in the playoffs in Region III will be fun. Vidor and their Slot-T offense gets the nod for third place, while in a bit of a surprise, Little Cypress-Mauriceville under a new head coach gets the fourth place spot.

Wheatley rolled through the Houston ISD district a year ago, really only getting a push from longtime rival Yates. The district should be much deeper this year but the Wildcats are still the favorites, with Furr as the leader to be runner-up. Look for Yates and North Forest to get the last two spots, with Worthing and Kashmere both being contenders as well.

Expect El Campo, who is a state title contender to roll through 12-4A D1 as there’s a gap between the Ricebirds and the rest of the district. Stafford has major skill talent, but they don’t have the size and depth up front to challenge El Campo, but the Spartans are a good bet to finish second. Needville is a solid playoff team and could easily move past Stafford for second, but the Blue Jays have a lot of youth. The battle for fourth will be quite competitive with Brazosport getting the edge over Columbia and Bay City, but don’t be surprised if there’s some tiebreakers involved late in the year.
