Tariq Bitson was impressive in Tarleton’s opening game of catching five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown against McNeese. CoVID-19 forced the senior to miss the Texans game against New Mexico State, and Bitson had struggled to return to form.
That is until last Saturday. The Adams State transfer was nearly an unstoppable force against Dixie State, catching 12 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Texans to a 37-15 victory.
The 2019 NCAA Division II All-American joins fellow 2019 All-American and current teammate Zimari Manning as the only Texans to record 200 yards receiving in a game since 2010.
The Bearkats defense was dominating last Saturday in a 71-17 blowout win over No. 7 Nicholls.
The leader of the defensive charge was senior defensive lineman Jahari Kay.
Kay recorded five tackles, 2.5 sacks, forced two fumbles as part of a Bearkats defense that continually pressured the Nicholls quarterbacks and held the Colonels rushing attack in check.
While his stats from last Saturday are impressive, it is his 24-yard interception return that most people will remember.
Kameryn Alexander hit the Nicholls receiver when the ball arrived, knocking the ball into the air. Kay was en route to help with a tackle when he snatched the ball out of the air and returned it for a touchdown to give the Kats a 24-17 lead late in the second quarter.
It is past time we here at Dave Campbell’s Texas Football give praise to the men behind one of the top offensive teams in the country.
The Hardin-Simmons entire offensive line earns a helmet sticker this week after paving the way for 601 total yards of offense (324 rush, 277 passing) in the Cowboys 41-14 win over Howard Payne last Saturday.
With the win, the Cowboys earned the right to host the American Southwest Conference championship game on March 27th.
The starters along the HSU offensive line are Carson Ikels (Sr, Dripping Springs HS), Boomer Warren (Jr, Haslet HS), Elias Berkel (Jr, Langham Creek HS), Hunter Moore (Jr, Wimberley HS), and Kendrick James (Sr, Abilene Cooper HS).
The quintet has led the Cowboys to a 3-0 start to the season while averaging an incredible 531.7 total yards and 41 points per game.
While an offensive line typically excels in either the rushing or the passing attack, the Cowboys line has been remarkably efficient in all areas averaging 261.3 yards rushing and 270.3 yards passing per game.
These men are the bedrock behind an HSU offense that is averaging 5.9 yards per rush and have only allowed two sacks on 91 passing attempts this year.
