Midwestern State quarterback Derrick Ponder is no stranger to Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium.
The senior transfer from Jackson State once roamed the sidelines as a ball boy for the Rider Raiders when his father, Scott, was head coach and played on the venerable field as a quarterback while Iowa Park’s stadium was receiving an overhaul.
The Bells High School product returned home and led the Mustangs to a 45-34 victory over Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Ponder completed 24-of-37 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns and took hold of a quarterback position in flux after a tough 2019 season.
He also took full advantage of his talented wide receiver corps led by junior Kylan Harrison and freshman Ja’Marzeyea Arvie.
Harrison, a junior from W.T. White High School, had five receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while Arvie, from North Mesquite High School, added 92 yards and a touchdown on eight catches.
