Cypress Woods High School has hired Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial head coach Cody Simper for the same position.
Simper, who started the program at Veterans Memorial in 2015, has run up an impressive 50-14 record in the past five years and led the Eagles to the Class 5A-Division I state semifinals in 2020. Prior to that stint, Simper was head coach at Corpus Christi Ray from 2010-2014 where he posted a 30-24 overall record.
In the winter of 2015, he was selected by Corpus Christi ISD to begin the football program at Veterans Memorial High, which opened in the fall of 2015 playing a JV- and freshman-only schedule. Simper's squad posted a 4-6 record in 2016 with his team playing a varsity schedule with no seniors; from that point on the Eagles became a power in the Coastal Bend rattling off four straight seasons of 10 or more wins, culminating in a 13-1 mark in 2010.
Simper, a native of Gonzales, began his coaching career at Corpus Christi Ray where he coached running backs from 2004-2007 under now Victoria East head coach Roland Gonzalez. Simper followed Coach Gonzalez to Cy-Fair ISD in 2008 when Coach Gonzalez was hired as the head coach newly opened Cypress Springs, where Simper was promoted to offensive coordinator. At the age of 28, he was hired for his first head coaching job at Ray.
Simper is known as an efficient and organized coach who brings plenty of energy and enthusiasm to the table; his teams are known for playing a wide-open and fun style of football who encourages his athletes to play multiple sports.
He’ll take over a Cy Woods program that has seen their share of success. Since opening in 2008, Woods has only posted three losing seasons, but they haven’t been past the area round of the playoffs since 2014.
