Waco ISD Hires
Waco ISD filled their two open head football jobs on Monday by naming South Grand Prairie defensive coordinator Linden Heldt as the head coach at Class 6A Waco High and Little Rock, AR head coach Kent Laster as the next head coach at 5A-Division II Waco University.
Heldt, the longtime defensive coordinator at SGP, had been a big part of an always tough Warriors defensive unit and is well thought of in coaching circles. University went out of state to make their hire bringing in Laster who spent three years in Little Rock, Laster is a Texan and played collegiately at Texas State in addition to spending time on staff at Weatherford and Frisco Heritage.
San Antonio Pieper Hires First Ever Head Coach
Massive growth north and west of San Antonio continues and its centered in Comal ISD, which will jump from three football playing high schools to five in 2022. Davenport HS opened up this fall and played a sub-varsity schedule and will play an outlaw varsity schedule in 2021 before jumping into a UIL district in 2022. They hired Boerne Champion assistant JD Zimmerhanzel last spring. Pieper HS will open in the Fall of 2021 and will play an outlaw varsity slate before jumping into a UIL district in 2022 as well. CISD on Thursday night made their selection for that school’s first head coach naming Cedar Park offensive coordinator Nick Rogers as their head football coach. Rogers coordinated one of the state’s most explosive offensive attacks in 2020 as the Timberwolves averaged over fifty points per game and played for the state title in Class 5A-Division I.
Los Fresnos Hires Alumnus David Cantu
Los Fresnos, considered one of the most desirable jobs in the Rio Grande Valley, turned to a familiar face to fill their coaching opening as alum David Cantu was hired on Monday night. Cantu, who was an assistant at Los Fresnos at one point, had spent the past nine seasons leading nearby Brownsville Veterans Memorial. Cantu posted a strong 61-33 overall record in his nine years and led the Chargers to the area round of the playoffs twice, including a 10-2 mark in 2017. He takes over a Los Fresnos squad that made the regional semifinals in 2016 and 2017 but had struggled the past three seasons.
Chad Rogers Leaves Denison For Tioga
In what is viewed as a surprise move, Denison HFC/AD Chad Rogers resigned his post at Denison after nine seasons to take over at Class 2A-Division I Tioga as their HFC/AD. Rogers, who holds a career record of 146-85 as a head coach, posted a 49-45 record at Denison, but had failed to win a playoff game in his tenure. Rogers had indicated he felt it was best for the Denison program to hear a new voice and that he was excited about the challenge ahead at fast growing Tioga, which has seen their enrollment nearly double in the past five years. The Bulldogs in 2017 played six-man football and moved up to 2A-Division II in the 2018 realignment, they moved up again in 2020 to 2A-Division I. 2022 could bring another move up as Tioga expect to be very close to the 3A-Division II cutoff.
Flemming Steps Aside at Fulshear
The only head football coach Fulshear High has known resigned his post on Monday as Oschlor Flemming tendered his resignation letter to Lamar Consolidated ISD. The Chargers in their first season in Class 5A had their best season in their young history posting a respectable 5-5 record and the future does look bright for the school in the fast-growing LCISD which is adding two new high schools to the mix in the next three years.
El Campo Makes a Splash Hire

Jimmy Thompson Resigns at Crockett
Jimmy Thompson, who won a state title as a head coach at Garrison in 2003 and as an assistant in Mexia in 1989, stepped down Tuesday morning from his post as HFC/AD at Crockett after seven seasons. Thompson, a 23-year head coaching veteran with an impressive 248-128-1 overall record, was quick to point out he is not retiring and has only resigned his post; rumors are Coach Thompson could be landing a gig very soon in Central Texas. Coach Thompson in seven years at Crockett posted a 53-32 overall record, leading the Bulldogs to the regional finals in 2015 and the regional semifinals in 2014 and 2016. His teams advanced to the area playoffs in 2019 and 2020 and the Crockett opening should generate plenty of interest statewide.
Four-Star Running Back Transfers to Keller Timber Creek
In his first year as a head coach Marshall Williams guided Keller Timber Creek to the playoffs with a relatively young team. The Falcons hopes for 2021 got a boost with the arrival of four-star running back Emeka Megwa to campus. Megwa at 6’0, 225 can handle a heavy workload and pairs that tough running with breakaway speed. He currently holds 36 FBS scholarship offers and will certainly be a highly sought after recruit as the early signing period approaches in late 2021.
