The Texas Longhorns have reportedly targeted Washington defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski for the same role on Steve Sarkisian's staff.
Kwiatkowski presided over one of the best defenses in the sport over the past several seasons with the Huskies. He came to Washington with Chris Petersen from Boise State and helped take Washington to another level.
In Kwiatkowski's last season as a full-time defensive playcaller, the Huskies ranked No. 8 nationally in total defense and fifth in scoring defense while playing in an offense-heavy Pac-12. Washington led the Pac-12 in total defense in four of Kwiatkowski's six seasons under Petersen.
The Huskies went 55-26 under Petersen, including a stretch of 32 wins from 2016-18 and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. He handed playcalling responsibilities to co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake for two years, but took over responsibilities again when Lake became head coach.
Washington has also recruited and produced a number of NFL players, including first round picks Vita Vea, Shaq Thompson, Marcus Peters and Shaq Thompson.
Sarkisian is still in the midst of putting together his first staff at Texas. Other reported hires include Blake Gideon as safeties coach, Jeff Banks as assistant head coach and special teams coordinator and Kyle Flood as offensive line coach. Receivers coach Andre Coleman and running backs coach Stan Drayton could be retained.
