Texas Tech football has staff changes on the horizon, but the man in charge will be back.
Red Raiders coach Matt Wells is expected to return in 2021, according to a report from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. However, offensive coordinator David Yost was let go after two years with the program.
“Coach Yost cares deeply about this program, our players and is a true professional,” Wells said in a statement. “This is a difficult decision, but I recognize that I have a responsibility to our players, to our fans and to our administration to do what is best for our program as we move forward. Sometimes change is necessary, and I feel like this is one of those times."
Yost was a Broyles Award semifinalist in 2018 after helping Utah State transform into one of the nation's top offenses. When Wells was announced as head coach, bringing Yost to Lubbock was a big part of the draw.
However, Yost's offenses never found their rhythm during his two years in Lubbock. The Red Raiders fell from No. 53 to No. 60 in scoring offense nationally in 2020 and the passing offense ranked bottom 50 in yards per attempt. Texas Tech scored 21 points or fewer four times this season.
Wells will begin a national search for a new offensive coordinator, but it's unclear what kind of system Wells hopes to run with the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech finished the 2020 season at 4-6 with wins over Baylor, West Virginia, Kansas and Houston Baptist. The Red Raiders have just one bowl appearance since 2015.
