Texas-Kansas State Preview

The Texas Longhorns will try to put the last seven days behind them and travel on the road to face off against the Kansas State Wildcats at 11 a.m. Saturday on FOX.

After losing to Iowa State on a missed field goal and reaching the brink of Big 12 title game elimination, Texas faced one of the tougher weeks in recent memory. Rumors abound about head coach Tom Herman's job security with rumors that donors are starting to move on. Two captains – OT Sam Cosmi and DB Caden Sterns – opted out the rest of the season. Now, the Longhorns will have to get things together for a matchup against an always frisky Kansas State team.

Kansas State got off to a blazing start to Big 12 play, but have struggled to find consistent offense. The Wildcats have lost four straight games and averaged just 14.8 points per game over the stretch. The struggles culminated with a blown two-score fourth quarter lead against Baylor last week. However, this is still the same team that beat TCU and Oklahoma and played Oklahoma State within two points.

The Longhorns historically struggled mightily against Bill Snyder’s Kansas State team, losing seven of nine games at one point. However, Herman has won all three matchups since taking over at Texas. Last season, Texas kicker Cameron Dicker hit a field goal as time expired to launch the Longhorns to victory. Running back Keaontay Ingram had one of his best career games with 139 yards and two touchdowns.

However, Texas’ chances come down to defense. Kansas State leads only Kansas among Big 12 teams in total and scoring offense, reaching just 325.1 yards and 26.1 points per game. The Longhorns have been no stranger to winning ugly in 2020. Without their top offensive lineman, riding Joseph Ossai and the defensive front seems like the best path to victory.

Players to Watch

Texas: Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is starting to find his groove after moving to the position full-time in 2020. Over the last two weeks, Overshown posted 16 tackles, three tackles for loss, two passes defended and a forced fumble.

Kansas State: Running back Deuce Vaughn is one of the most dynamic running backs in America – and he's just a true freshman. Vaughn has accumulated 517 rushing yards, 389 receiving yards and seven TDs in nine career games.
