UPDATE (Nov. 10): Texas A&M's matchup against Tennessee has been postponed due to complications from COVID-19.
"Since the beginning of COVID-19, the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff has been our number one priority," Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork said. "Throughout the last several months, we have been reminded how important it is to be flexible and nimble, because this scenario was expected to happen."
The Aggies reported three total cases of COVID-19 within the program on Monday, including two players and one off-field staffer. However, two of those individuals were on the trip to South Carolina. The increased possibility of close interaction in road settings meant many players and coaches must now enter the contact tracing protocol.
The Aggies' matchup against Tennessee has tenatively been rescheduled for Dec. 12, when the SEC left an open date in case of rescheduled games.
This is the first postponement involving Texas A&M of the season. However, nine teams in the state of Texas have lost at least one game to COVID-19. All four Conference USA teams in the state were unable to play because of complications last week, and UTEP recently had a matchup moved from El Paso to Midland because of the situation in El Paso.
Original Story (Nov. 9): Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher announced that the program has paused practices after two new positive cases of COVID-19 among players within the program. One of the positive tests was a player and the other was off-field personnel.
The Aggies will hold meetings and film study on Zoom on Monday while the program re-tests all its players and works through contact tracing. At this point, Fisher is planning for the game on Saturday against Tennessee in Knoxville to still occur. However, there is no timetable to make that call
"Right now, everything is full go," Fisher said.
Texas A&M defensive back Demani Richardson was one player who was confirmed positive for the COVID-19 protocols last week, but no other players have been named at this time.
The news comes as cases of COVID-19 surge nationally and cross the 10 million case mark. The national case rate has risen by 59 percent, according to the New York Times. Additionally, fellow SEC foe LSU also announced earlier today that the program is dealing with a new spread of COVID-19 cases and is moving precariously close to the mandated 53-man available roster limit.
In addition, Texas A&M will not allow tailgating prior to the Ole Miss game on Nov. 21 at Kyle Field.
