SMU wide receiver Reggie Roberson is out for the season, according to the Dallas Morning News. Running back TJ McDaniel is also out for the season.
Roberson suffered a non-contact injury in the third quarter against Memphis after catching a deep pass from Shane Buechele. He finished with 243 yards and two touchdowns before the injury.
Roberson was selected as the top wide receiver in the state of Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in the summer magazine. Through four games, he was firing on all cylinders with 474 yards and five touchdowns.
The senior from Mesquite Horn suffered a season-ending injury in 2019 as well. The Mustangs are 12-0 in games that Roberson played in over the past two seasons and 2-3 when he misses games. With Roberson out, SMU will need more production from Danny Gray and Rashee Rice. This could also be an opportunity for Arkansas transfer TQ Jackson to step up.
McDaniel suffered what appeared to be a foot or ankle injury on the first play against Memphis and had to be helped off the field. He posted 100-yard performances against Texas State and Stephen F. Austin despite splitting carries with Ulysses Bentley IV.
McDaniel was one of the top high school players in the state of Texas at Southlake Carroll. SMU used McDaniel as part of its "Dallas" billboard campaign during his true freshman season.
SMU is off to a 4-0 start for the second year in a row. The Mustangs hope to capitalize on a 10-win campaign in 2019, the first such season since 1983.
