A leaked memo from the UIL gave coaches and fans across the state hope on Tuesday morning that the 2020 high school football season could proceed as normal.
Tthe memo indicates that on June 8 the UIL intends to open up summer strength and conditioning to high school athletes in Texas.
What summer strength and conditioning will look like (at least to start) is still up in the air as the UIL did not offer up specifics or give any guidance yet to the schools. Sources close to the situation indicate that guidance could be delivered to the schools as soon as this week. The start of summer strength and conditioning will mark the beginning of what many hope is a return to normalcy after a two month shutdown to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“UIL is aware of Governor (Greg) Abbott’s May 18 announcement and is actively working with appropriate state officials to allow schools to begin limited summer strength and conditioning and marching band activities on June 8, 2020," a UIL spokesperson said. "As soon as the details of that plan are finalized, UIL will release them to schools to allow time to plan and prepare for bringing students back to campus for these purposes."
Excitement among the Texas High School coaching community was rampant on social media Tuesday. Brownwood head coach Sammy Burnett is certainly one coach who is ready to get things going.
"Our staff just met a few minutes ago, as coaches we aren’t used to sitting around so we are ready to work," he said. "We are already putting plans in place and waiting for our guidance to know what we can and can’t do. But when we get started it’s going be a big deal, I think kids and coaches are going to really appreciate what we have, because we’ve all missed it. We are a family and I think all of us won’t take what we have for granted, because it’s special.”
