What is UTSA getting in grad transfer QB Josh Adkins?

UTSA added a commitment from New Mexico State grad transfer Josh Adkins three weeks ago to fortify the quarterback room. Adkins is a Texas high school football product with a long history in the San Antonio area.

To get the inside scoop on Adkins, we turned to one of his top high school teammates at Spring Branch Smithson Valley: TCU safety Trevon Moehrig, who played with and defended Adkins in practice for multiple seasons.

“He’s one of the top quarterbacks I’ve seen throughout my football career,” Moehrig told Texas Football. “He’s a very accurate passer, can scramble, can get the ball out. I think UTSA is going to get a top quarterback out of him”

Adkins’ numbers were inconsistent at New Mexico State, but not without context. He threw for 5,151 yards, 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in 22 games while completing just under 60 percent of his passes. He added 158 yards and four rushing scores.

However, NMSU ranked among the worst teams in college football each of the past two seasons, and not much of it was Adkins’ fault. The Aggies ranked bottom five in total defense, second-to-last in scoring defense and No. 89 in rushing offense. In fact, the passing offense has been the best unit on the roster by far the past two seasons.

Moehrig plays safety at TCU, but primarily played cornerback in high school. He remembers the kind of issues Adkins presented in practice, especially how fast he could get the ball out and to his receivers behind a defender’s back.

“I remember back in high school when I was covering some of the guys he was throwing to, he gets the ball out so quick and is so accurate that a DB couldn’t even get there to make the play, even with great coverage,” Moehrig said. “He’s also really good at being able to look you off. You think he’s always looking over there, but then he’s coming back at you with a drive route. He’s just a really versatile player.”

A quarterback getting an endorsement from Moehrig means something. The Horned Frog ranked as the No. 1 safety in college football a season ago by Pro Football Focus. Adkins’ high school performance bears it out, too. He threw for 6,831 yards and 66 touchdowns in a standout three-year career to become the leading passer in the history of Smithson Valley. The San Antonio Express-News named Adkins its offensive player in the year in 2016.

Adkins will compete with another elite San Antonio product – Schertz Clemens QB Frank Harris – for the starting job. The Roadrunners ranked No. 106 nationally at 182.4 passing yards per game last season. Harris has played in only four games over the past two seasons because of injuries. Adkins will likely play a big role in 2020 regardless of who wins the starting job.

Adkins has two years of eligibility remaining at UTSA.

“I don’t think you’ll see someone working as hard as [Adkins],” Moehrig said. “He’s always working, no matter what. Even on off days, you’ll see him always trying to improve his game. At the same time, he’s super humble. You can’t go wrong with that.”
