At long last, justice has come for two of the greatest Texan players in college football history.
SMU running back Eric Dickerson and Houston wide receiver Elmo Wright have been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation announced on Tuesday.
Dickerson isn't just one of the best running backs in Texas college history – he's on the short list for best in the history of the sport. During his four-year career from 1979 to 1982, Dickerson rushed for 4,450 yards, earned unanimous All-America honors and owns 12 school records. His pairing with Craig James became known as the "Pony Express."
After graduating from SMU, he went on to earn six Pro Bowl trips, lead the NFL in rushing four times and become a member of the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Of course, he is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Dickerson played high school ball at Sealy. He is the seventh SMU player and ninth overall Mustang to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Others include Doak Walker, Jerry LeVias and Don Meredith.
Wright was one of the original fan favorites at the University of Houston – Tilman Fertitta listed him among his favorite players. He was the first football player ever to perform an end zone dance and developed the celebration of "high-stepping" into the end zone. His football credentials more than hold up, too.
Wright posted 3,347 yards and 34 touchdowns while playing for a rush-based veer offense, and was named an All-American. He still holds five Houston records, including most 200-yard games in a career.
Wright becomes the third Houston player in program history to earn immortality in the College Football Hall of Fame, joining Heisman winner Andre Ware and defensive tackle Wilson Whitley. He played high school football at segregated George Washington Carver High School in Sweeny, followed by at Sweeny after the schools integrated.
Dickerson and Wright, along with 15 other players and two coaches, will be enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame during a banquet on Dec. 8 in New York, and will later have an on-campus ceremony to honor them. Other notable names on the list include Alcorn State QB Steve McNair, Nebraska QB Eric Crouch and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey.
