Gruver 44, Tahoka 41: In the second game of a fantastic bi-district doubleheader at Kimbrough Stadium, Gruver held off a valiant Tahoka comeback to advance to the area playoffs with a 44-41 win.
Gruver raced out to a 22-0 lead after one quarter as Matthew Felderhoff returned a fumble for a touchdown, then QB Carter Armes tossed a pair of touchdowns to Thomas Speck and Oklahoma commit Jalin Conyers. The lead would swell to 30-0 early in the second quarter as Armes tossed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Haynes.
Tahoka would start to climb back in the game before halftime as Malik Hamilton had a pair of touchdown runs to make the score 30-12. GHS would make it 38-12 after a Haynes 11-yard TD, but Tahoka, and specifically Hamilton, would respond with two more touchdown runs, the second being from 55 yards out to make it 38-27 Gruver with just over seven minutes left in the game.
With 4:44 remaining, it looked like Gruver would ice the game as Haynes hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Armes to make it 44-27. But Tahoka would not go away as the Bulldogs scored two touchdowns in 80 seconds as Braden Stone threw two long touchdown passes to Andrew Saldana and John Stone and THS benefitted from a Gruver turnover to cut the lead to 44-41 with 3:05 remaining.
Tahoka would force a Gruver punt, used its timeouts and got the ball back with exactly two minutes left and a chance to win the game. Tahoka moved to the Gruver 28 but an interception ended the Bulldogs' rally.
