Aledo Shows Grit in Winning 9th State Title

Aledo earned its ninth state title in impressive fashion by knocking off Fort Bend Marshall for the second-straight season, this one a much closer game at 45-42. Aledo raced out to a 14-0 lead and never really looked back in this one as the Buffs cut the lead to 11 in the second half and got it down to a field goal late, but couldn’t recover the onside kick to really put the pressure on Aledo. Alabama commit RB Jase McClellan in his final high school game led Aledo with 218 yards rushing and two touchdowns, despite being on a bad ankle. Utah commit WR Money Parks led the Bearcats with 132 yards receiving and two touchdowns as well. QB Jake Bishop continued the Bishop legacy of elite QB’s at Aledo with his second title piloting the offense. Aledo came into the game dealing with multiple injuries to key players and fresh off back to back close wins over Ennis and Lubbock Cooper, but the Bearcats once they got to the title game showed how elite they are as a team and as a program.

North Shore Wins Second Straight Title

Galena Park North Shore continues to be a thorn in Duncanville’s side as the Mustangs defeated Duncanville, 31-17, to win their second straight 6A-Division I title in front of a crowd of over 47,000 at AT&T Stadium. The Mustangs won the battle in the trenches in the second half on both sides of the ball and that proved to be key as they pulled away from a 17-17 tie at halftime. Miami commit LB Corey Flagg earned defensive MVP honors for a North Shore defense that knew Duncanville was limited on offense and adjusted accordingly.

Dematrius Davis Provides Missing Star Power

In a game where both teams were missing key players (Duncanville QB Ja’Quinden Jackson, North Shore WR Shadrach Banks and RB Zach Evans), North Shore junior QB Dematrius Davis emerged as the star for the Mustangs in their win. The Virginia Tech commit didn’t have eye popping numbers (91 passing yards, 1 TD, 115 rushing yards, 1 TD), but his poise and leadership proved to be vital for the Mustangs in key moments. Davis was the best player on the field Saturday and his ability led the Mustangs to their fourth state title.

Austin Westlake Wins Second Title in School History

Austin Westlake’s dominant defense carried the Chaps to their second state title in school history with a convincing 24-0 victory over Denton Guyer to conclude the 2019 season. Although much of the narrative will be about Denton Guyer QB Eli Stowers leaving in the first quarter with a knee injury. Westlake’s offense only scored 24 but the game circumstances dictated a lot of that, the Chaps probably could have thrown more points on the board if necessary, QB Kirkland Michaux threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chaparrals offensive attack with his top target being Jackson Coker who had 84 yards and a touchdown.

Attendance Watch

Overall attendance in 2019 was slightly less than 2018 as the average game attendance was 21,227 which was down from 22,117 in 2018. The largest crowd of the weekend was the 6A-Division I crowd as Duncanville-Galena Park North Shore drew 47,818. Total attendance for the weekend in all 12 games was 217,679.
