Coverboy of the Week: Jordyn Brooks, Texas Tech (Houston Stratford)

Brooks played the best game of his young career in the biggest spot against No. 21 Oklahoma State. He spoke after the game about how embarrassed he was by the defense’s performance against Oklahoma, and followed it up with 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry in a 45-35 win over Oklahoma State. 

Defensive Duo of the Week: James Lynch (Round Rock)/Bravvion Roy (Spring), Baylor

It’s harder to be much more disruptive than the Baylor duo was on Saturday against Kansas State. The pair combined for 10 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble in a tremendous defensive performance against a typically solid Kansas State offense. 

Hero Award: James Proche, SMU (DeSoto)

Proche was all over the field in a huge come-from-behind victory over Tulsa, but his last play is what will be remembered forever at SMU. The senior lunged outwards and just managed to get a single foot inbounds in triple-overtime to keep the Mustangs’ perfect season alive. That play will only get bigger as the Mustangs fight for a New Year’s Six bowl berth. 

Break in Case of Emergency: Roschon Johnson, Texas (Port Neches-Groves)

Johnson was brought to Texas as an elite quarterback recruit, but Tom Herman just has to find a way to get him on the field anymore. Against West Virginia, he had his first 100-yard game, and generally kept a wounded running game going. 

Remember the Name: Dadrion Taylor, Texas Tech

Taylor was moved to defensive back at Texas Tech, and is playing there for the first time in his life. When Desmon Smith got hurt, Taylor was thrown into the fire against Oklahoma State’s elite receiving core. He was admirable, finishing with three tackles and a fumble recovery. Taylor is going to be a special player when he’s an upperclassman. 

Small College Star: QB Jon Copeland, UIW (Argyle)

Copeland and UIW had a big game against upstart Houston Baptist in order to settle back into the Southland race. Copeland was tremendous, completing 75 percent of his passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns in a tight 38-36 victory over the Huskies. 

Dave’s Pick: JaMycal Hasty, Baylor (Longview)

Hasty’s rushing numbers were solid: 8 carries for 92 yards, along with a 21-yard kickoff return. However, he helped spread the field as a receiver and was critical in blocking for some big plays down the field. Simply put, Hasty was everything a running back needs to be against Kansas State.
