For teams that haven’t had their bye week, the regular season is halfway complete. Are our experts – both human and digital – getting any better as they predict the result of key games each week? Here’s a look at what we thought would happen in week 5, and what actually happened.
Longview takes sting out of high-scoring YellowJackets
What Greg Tepper thought: Longview was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Longview was a 6-point favorite
What our computer thought: Longview was a 16-point favorite
What happened: No. 4 Longview 49, No. 16 Rockwall 3
We’d like to say we called this one, but we didn’t see Longview’s defensive domination coming. Rockwall had scored at least 45 points in each game coming in and the combination of Braedyn Locke throwing to Jaxon Smith-Njigba had been unstoppable. Smith-Njigba left the game with an injury in the second quarter having made just one catch for just 4 (four) yards to that point. Longview rode Haynes King’s legs – six well-time carries resulted in five touchdowns – and the Lobos held a fourth straight opponent to 7 points or fewer.
Broncos buck Bears in battle of San Antonio unbeatens
What Greg Tepper thought: Brennan was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Brandeis was a 4-point favorite
What our computer thought: Brennan was a 2-point favorite
What happened: Brandeis 51, Brennan 16
The battle of District 28-6A unbeatens didn’t quite go the way we planned, with Brandeis staying perfect on the season in a big way. Brennan came into the game with a stifling defense that had allowed only 130 yards per game. Led by quarterback Jordan Battles, the Broncos scored 28 straight points after the Brennan had taken a 7-0 lead. Battles rushed for 134 yards, passed for 110 more on just three completions. Brennan played without quarterback Jordan Flores (leg).
Greyhounds never hit stride after long trip to Midland Lee
What Greg Tepper thought: Midland Lee was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Midland Lee was a 38-point favorite
What our computer thought: Midland Lee was a 23-point favorite
What happened: No. 21 Midland Lee 63, San Benito 12
Sometimes these interregional non-district games shape up, sometimes they look like one team travelled from one corner of the state to another. The Rebels flexed their unbeaten West Texas muscles and kept the Greyhounds from getting out of the blocks. The Rebels rolled up 700 yards of offense and have scored 207 points in their last three non-district games. Running back Makhilyn Young and quarterback Mikey Serrano had their way with San Benito’s defense.
Sharks take a bite out of Angleton in battle of ranked 5A DI foes
What Greg Tepper thought: Shadow Creek was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Shadow Creek was a 10-point favorite
What our computer thought: Shadow Creek was a 14-point favorite
What happened: No. 3 Shadow Creek 42, No. 6 Angleton 14
Shadow Creek hasn’t lost a regular season game, ever, as a varsity program. Of course this is only the Sharks second year of varsity football, but that hasn’t slowed their development. Kyron Drones and Greg Hancock connected early and often as the Sharks jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised in a top-10 matchup. Angleton turned the ball over five times in its first loss of the season.
Consolidated finds ace to rally past Huntsville
What Greg Tepper thought: A&M Consolidated was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: A&M Consolidated was a 6-point favorite
What our computer thought: A&M Consolidated was a 5-point favorite
What happened: No. 5 A&M Consolidated 24, No. 6 Huntsville 14
For the last six quarters, A&M Consolidated had no answers for Huntsville’s stinging pass rush. At halftime Friday night, coach Lee Fedora found a wild card. Well, wild cat. Receiver Kerry Brooks slid behind center and the Tigers scrapped a passing attack that suffered seven first-half sacks. Brooks spearheaded a rushing attack that gained 174 yards in the second half after managing just nine in the first half.
Gilmer snaps Newton’s state-best winning streak
What Greg Tepper thought: Newton was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Gilmer was a 2-point favorite
What our computer thought: Newton was a 9-point favorite
What happened: 4A DII No. 6 Gilmer 16, 3A DII No. 1 Newton 0
Two-time defending 3A DII champion Newton stepped up two classes and hit the road to battle a Gilmer team looking to avenge a 51-31 loss in 2018. Behind a lights-out defensive effort, the Buckeyes did exactly that, holding Newton to 115 total yards, while recording a blocked punt and a safety.
Klein Oak pulls upset over The Woodlands
What Greg Tepper thought: NA
What Matt Stepp thought: NA
What our computer thought: The Woodlands was a 9-point favorite
What Happened: Klein Oak 21, No. 17 The Woodlands 10
The Woodlands brought a three-game winning streak into Klein expecting more. Instead, Klein Oak’s Dwight McGlothern caught two long touchdown passes from Montrell Brown, who also topped 100 yards rushing. McGlothern also came up with one of the two interceptions Oak’s defense produced against Ben Mills.
Refugio rally avenges 2018 defeat to Mart
What Greg Tepper thought: Refugio was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Refugio was an 8-point favorite
What our computer thought: Refugio was an 18-point favorite
What Happened: 2A DI No. 1 Refugio 48, 2A DII No. 3 Mart 40
While our experts saw DI Refugio winning a home game against DII Mart (and Matt Stepp hit it on the number), they didn’t quite see it panning out the way it did. Mart struck early and often, leading 28-6 in the second quarter before the Bobcats put a furious rally together on the legs of Austin Ochoa and Ysidro Mascorro, both of whom rushed for more than 100 yards. Mart led 40-34 in the fourth quarter before Ochoa scored the go-ahead touchdown on a sneak and Naaji Gadsden broke off a 54-yard touchdown to seal Refugio’s first win over Mart.
Clemens snaps Steele’s dominance in Battle of 3009
What Greg Tepper thought: Cibolo Steele was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: NA
What our computer thought: Cibolo Steele was a 2-point favorite
What Happened: Schertz Clemens 28, No. 23 Cibolo Steele 23
We previewed the Battle of 3009 last week and saw that, while recent games have been close, they’ve all gone Steele’s way. The Buffaloes finally broke through, ending a 9-game skid in the series and winning for the first time since 2006 – the inaugural meeting between school district foes. And the way Clemens snapped the skid? A goal-line stand on the game’s final play. A herd of Buffalo met Steele’s De’Quavion Thomas just shy of the goal line.
Wellington soars to knock Panhandle from ranks of unbeatens
What Greg Tepper thought: Panhandle was the favorite
What Matt Stepp thought: Panhandle was a 14-point favorite
What our computer thought: Panhandle was a 17-point favorite
What Happened: 2A DII No. 7 Wellington 60, 2A DI No. 5 Panhandle 41
When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. Wellington stepped up a division and flew past a Panhandle team that hadn’t been challenged in a 4-0 start. John Holcomb rushed for four second-half touchdowns (and a pair of 2-point conversions) to help the Skyrockets pull away. Panhandle led 14-6 after the first quarter but Wellington scored 40 of the next 53 points.
