DENTON -- North Texas junior quarterback Mason Fine went out in the third quarter against FAU with an apparent wrist injury. X-rays came back negative for any structural damage. Trainers said Fine has a deep gash on his wrist.
Fine is throwing on the sideline and could try to enter the game.
Down 24-20 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter, Fine dropped back to pass and both of his offensive tackles whiffed on their blocks. Both blitzers crashed into Fine at the same time and sent him back into the turf. Fine immediately went down and stayed down motionless cradling his left arm.
On review, it appeared an FAU player’s helmet crashed into Fine’s forearm. Trainers appeared to stabilize his left wrist and helped him get to his feet. Fine walked off the field and immediately went to the locker room for X-rays.
Fine is putting together one of the finest seasons in the history of North Texas football. The true junior ranked No. 6 nationally with 3,119 passing yards and No. 14 with 23 passing touchdowns after 10 games. Fine set the UNT record for career passing yards a week ago in a loss to Old Dominion. He has already clinched the two most productive passing seasons in program history.
In his place, North Texas inserted senior backup quarterback Quinn Shanbour. Shanbour rushed for a pair of touchdowns to help the Mean Green take a 34-31 lead late in the third quarter.
