There aren't many marquee games, but Saturday figures to be a great weekend for college football at the small college level. Here's an overview and picks for some of the biggest ones.

GAME: Southern University vs. Texas Southern

WHEN: Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas

WHY IT MATTERS: The Jaguars and Tigers will meet in the first ever State Fair Showdown at the Cotton Bowl. This is the second game at the State Fair involving HBCU schools. Southern and Texas Southern fans will be looking to begin a tradition on par with the State Fair Classic between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M. The game also matters as Southern is looking to take another step towards winning the SWAC West division and a spot in the SWAC championship game after they upset Prairie View A&M on the road last week.

INSIDE THE STATS: Both teams enter the game with less than impressive stats due to playing FBS schools during their non-conference schedule. Texas Southern averages 5.1 yards per play on offense while the defense has been below average allowing 6.7 yards per play. The Jaguars offense is on par with the Tigers, as they have averaged five yards per play while the defense is also below average allowing 6.2 yards per play.

GAME: Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 9 Tarleton State

WHEN: Saturday at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville, Texas

WHY IT MATTERS: Tarleton State will be trying to avoid a classic trap game after they defeated then No. 7 Texas A&M-Commerce on the road last week and have a game against No. 10 Midwestern State in Wichita Falls next week. The Texans are in complete control of the Lone Star Conference and an at-large bid in the NCAA DII playoffs, but a loss to the Javelinas would be devastating. Texas A&M-Kingsville are trying to win their first conference game this season as they have struggled since their overtime loss at Texas A&M-Commerce to open the season. The Javelinas will be looking for a consistent offensive performance this week.

INSIDE THE STATS: Texas A&M-Kingsville are an average team on both sides of the ball statistically. The Javelinas offense averages 4.9 yards per play while the defense is currently allowing 5.1 yards per play. Tarleton State enters the game with a powerful offense that averages 6.6 yards per play led by their rushing attack. The Texans also boast a good defense as they are second in the LSC allowing 4.3 yards per play.

GAME: Texas Lutheran at No. 9 Hardin-Simmons

WHEN: Saturday at 1 p.m. at Shelton Stadium in Abilene, Texas

WHY IT MATTERS: This game is one of the best small college games in Texas this week as the winner of this game will be in position to finish second in the American Southwest Conference and take a major step towards a possible at-large bid to the NCAA D-III playoffs. Both teams rely on their powerful ground attacks, as the Bulldogs average 238 yards rushing per game while the Cowboys average 298 rushing yards per game. Hardin-Simmons is hopeful that All-American Jaquan Hemphill will be able to return from injury this week. He has averaged 11.3 yards per carry this season.

INSIDE THE STATS: Texas Lutheran enters the game with an average offense statistically, but they are backed by a solid defense. The Bulldogs offense has averaged 5.1 yards per play this season while the defense is second in the ASC only allowing 4.6 yards per play. Hardin-Simmons brings a powerful offense and an average defense to the game. The Cowboys offense is second in the ASC as they average a whopping 7.6 yards per play while the defense has allowed 4.9 yards per play.

GAME: No. 12 Kilgore College at No. 16 Blinn College

WHEN: Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cub Stadium in Brenham, Texas

WHY IT MATTERS: This is the only small college game in Texas to feature both teams ranked in the top 20 this week. This game is critical for both teams as they are two of four teams currently tied atop the SWJCFC conference standings with a 3-2 record. With only four teams advancing to the conference playoffs, the winner of this game will only need a win next week in the regular season finale to guarantee a playoff spot. The loser of this game will face a must win situation next week and possibly need help to make the playoffs.

INSIDE THE STATS: Kilgore enters as one of the hottest teams in the SWJCFC as they have won three straight games including a win over then No. 4 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M since they inserted Dakota Michaels in the starting lineup at quarterback. The Rangers offense is averaging 35 points per game while the defense is only allowing 21 points per game. Blinn brings a potent offense to the game as they average 544 total yards and 47 points per game. The Buccaneers defense has been solid against the run as they only allow 89 yards rushing per game.
