El Paso Coronado (4-2, 0-1) vs El Paso Franklin (4-2, 1-0) — Sun Bowl

After outscoring their previous two opponents 77-0, Coronado dropped their first district game to Montwood last week, 17-10. The Thunderbirds will look to get back on track against a tough Franklin squad.

The Thunderbirds’ up-tempo offense heavily favors the run with Garrett Slaughter (611 yards, 7 TD) leading the effort. Slaughter was limited to just 35 yards on 23 carries and will need to have a better game in order to move the chains against Franklin’s stout defense. Defensively, all eyes are on middle linebacker Patrick Barrett (77 tackles) who had 12 tackles last week. Barrett is a hard-hitting backer who attacks gaps.

In stark contrast from the Thunderbirds, Franklin leans heavily on their passing game, led by Teddy Pedroza (1,331 passing yards, 11 TD). Pedroza may be the most talented quarterback in District 1-6A and can beat opposing secondaries with his arm. His favorite target is Gabriel Stonewall (451 receiving yards, 6 TD).

Odessa Permian (4-2, 1-0) at Amarillo Tascosa (4-2, 1-0)

Odessa Permian is off to a great start to the season with their only two losses coming to DFW powers Southlake Carroll and DeSoto. The Panthers will now be tested against Tascosa who took down Midland in their district opener.

Leading the Panthers’ spread offense is quarterback Peyton Powell, who's in his first season with Permian as he moved in from out of the district. Having running back Ed Williams, who earned Honorable Mention All-State honors last season, alongside him in the backfield has helped him settle in the new offense. Linebacker Matt Jones has anchored the Panthers 3-4 defense.

The Panthers defense will be tested against Tascosa’s uncommon flex bone offensive style. The Rebel offense has thrown just 40 passes this season but compiled over 1,700 total rushing yards. King Doerue headlines the running game and has already racked up 478 yards and seven touchdowns. Massive defensive lineman La’Byreous Moore (32 tackles, 2 sacks)  is the headliner on the defensive side of the ball and leads the Rebels 4-2-5 defense.

Huntsville (5-1, 3-0) at Lamar Consolidated (5-1, 2-1)

No. 5 Huntsville appears to be a top tier team in the 5A DII ranks with their only loss coming at the hands of defending state champions College Station. The Hornets grabbed an eye-opening win over A&M Consolidated in week five and followed it up by routing their next two opponents by a combined score of 126-0. Quarterback Matthew Southern (1,316 passing yards, 13 TD) and feature back Jaeryne Green lead the Hornet one-back offense but the strength of the team is on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive end T’Vondre Sweat has wreaked havoc amongst opposing offensive lines and headlined the 4-2-5 defensive formation. The Texas commit also has several playmakers behind them including defensive back Jadun McCarty and linebacker Shadrick Green.

Lamar Consolidated will have their work cut out for them against the Hornets but faced another one of the state’s top teams last week in their 34-28 loss to A&M Consolidated. B.J. Harris will need to have a phenomenal game against the Hornet defense in order for Consolidated to pull the upset. Harris will also look to the strong Mustang rushing attack — led by Taye McWilliams and Deonte Castleberry. Defensively, Consolidated has a strong defensive front with big men Ivan Kuykendall and AJ Harris headlining their 4-3 defense. The Mustangs will need to see improvement from their young secondary to stay close with the Hornets.

Others Worth Your Time:

Pleasanton (5-2, 0-2) at Boerne (5-1, 0-0)

Pleasanton has fallen on the wrong side of two close games in their first two district games, losing both by just one point. Boerne will look to quarterback Cole Boyd (1,365 passing yards, 18 TD) to start district play off with a win.

Caddo Mills (2-3, 0-1) at Dallas Roosevelt (3-2, 1-0)

Caddo Mills fell to Sunnyvale in their district opener last week and needs a win to climb back into a playoff spot in the standings. Roosevelt routed Lincoln last week and has averaged 50 points a game in their last two games.

Dalhart (5-2, 1-0) at Lubbock Estacado (5-2, 1-0)

After both teams started district play off with a win last week, they meet up in a matchup that will go a long way in determining who wins District 2-4A.
