Texas Tech redshirt sophomore quarterback Jett Duffey will start at quarterback, according to his brother Jade Duffey.
Duffey was inserted late in the first half against No. 12 West Virginia and ignited a late comeback. The Red Raiders went on a 24-7 run with Duffey in the game. However, he threw a critical pick-six late in a 42-34 loss against the Mountaineers. The sophomore finished with 172 passing yards and 86 rushing yards in just over a half.
Before arriving at Texas Tech, Duffey was a highly sought after high school quarter. Duffey won Mr. Texas Football in 2015 after leading Lake Ridge to the 5A state championship game and a 15-1 record as a senior. He was seen by many as the heir apparent, but finished third in a three-man quarterback competition during fall camp.
Opening day starter McLane Carter missed the last four games after sustaining a high ankle sprain during the first quarter against Ole Miss. True freshman Alan Bowman came in to replace Carter in the opener.
The true freshman excelled, and set the Big 12 record for passing yards in a game by a freshman with 605 against Houston. However, he went down on Sept. 30 against No. 12 West Virginia with a partially collapsed lung.
Bowman and Carter are both dressed and going through warmups. Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury expressed optimism that both would be available to play against the Horned Frogs.
Texas Tech takes on TCU at 6:30 p.m. CT tonight at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
