Texas linebacker Malcolm Roach will miss the rest of the 2018 season after undergoing surgery on an injured foot, according to multiple reports.
Roach suffered the injury in the Longhorns’ third game of the season, a 37-14 win over USC on Sept. 15. He was held out of games the last two weeks, and has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season.
The junior from Baton Rouge, La., was the opening-day starter at B-backer. He has started 11 in his three-year career on the 40 acres. Roach has 78 career tackles, 12 tackles for loss and five sacks in 28 appearances as a Longhorn.
Roach has not used his redshirt, and appeared in just three games before suffering his injury. That means he will automatically be eligible to redshirt the 2018 season without petitioning for a medical redshirt. With the new rule, Roach will be a redshirt junior by eligibility in 2019.
With Roach sidelined, backup middle linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch slides over to the B-Backer position alongside Anthony Wheeler and Gary Johnson. McCulloch has two tackles for loss in his first two starts in Roach's absense.
Freshman tight end Rob Cummins was also ruled out for the season on Monday. Defensive back Montrell Estell and safety B.J. Foster are both going through the concussion protocol, and are questionable for the Red River Showdown on Saturday.
Defensive back JaMarquis Durst, running back Keontay Ingram and wide receiver Brennan Eagles are expected to play against the Sooners.
