TCU football played a brutal game against Iowa State on Saturday, but ultimately emerged victorious with a 17-14 win at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.

The Horned Frogs needed a late field goal from Jonathan Song, which proved to be the difference in a tight ballgame. However, TCU barely hung on against a lesser Iowa State opponent. The schedule doesn't get much easier from here.

Here are three quick takeaways from TCU’s performance against Iowa State.

Nightmare relived

TCU lost to Iowa State a year ago. This one went almost exactly to the same script. TCU mustered just one offensive touchdown on the day. Iowa State slowed the game down and limited the amount of possessions to grind TCU’s momentum to a halt.

Luckily, TCU managed to pull it out this time. The Horned Frogs managed to make just a few extra defensive plays down the stretch against Zeb Noland to shut down the Cyclones offense. David Montgomery went down in the fourth quarter, and that doomed Iowa State down the stretch.

Bad Robinson

TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson’s turnover issues are getting out of control. Robinson threw his sixth interception on Saturday, and it was a terrible one into triple coverage by Iowa State. All six of his interceptions this season have come in the second half.

Even worse, Robinson didn’t contribute very much offensively. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown, an interception and a fumble. Robinson accumulated a total of four rushing yards. If he’s going to turn the ball over eight times in three games, he has to be more productive.

Well-timed bye week

TCU has gotten off to a tough start to the 2018 season. The Horned Frogs already have a pair of losses on their schedule, and still have games against Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia left on the schedule.

The Horned Frogs, first and foremost, have to get healthy. Shawn Robinson and KaVontae Turpin both went out with injuries against Iowa State. Both need to get healthy soon. Luckily, the bye comes at a perfect time. TCU won’t have to play again until a Thursday game against Texas Tech on Oct. 11.
