6A: Euless Trinity (1-0) vs. Sachse (0-1)
*Matchup will take place at the Cotton Bowl
After a heartbreaking loss last week to Coppell, whose kicker nailed a 57-yard field goal as time expired, No. 25 Sachse will look to avoid an 0-2 start against No. 13 Euless Trinity. In order to do that, Sachse will likely continue to use their two quarterback system of Anthony Beltran and Xavier Forman that led a Mustang offense that notched 28 points in week one. The Mustangs’ biggest strength comes in their depth at their skill positions, led by versatile athlete Myles Nash (54 yards rushing, 35 yards receiving and 1 TD) and running back KJ Williams (45 yards).
The offense will face a tougher defense this week, as the Trojans, who held last year’s 6A DII runner-up Waco Midway to just a single touchdown last week, may boast one of the toughest defenses in the area. The Trojans will likely feed feature running back Brandon Theus — who had a monster season-opener, running for 193 yards and three touchdowns.
5A: Amarillo (1-0) vs. Amarillo Tascosa (1-0)
Bivins Stadium should be boisterous as two Amarillo teams meet again in one of the state’s more storied rivalries. Amarillo head coach Chad Dunnam comes into the cross-classification matchup after notching a 48-41 win over Wolfforth Frenship in his debut with the Sandies. Despite the win, the Sandies’ inexperienced secondary had a rough go of it last week, as Frenship threw for 609 yards.
Fortunately for the Sandies, Tascosa will lean heavily on their run-heavy flexbone offense, as they threw just five passes in last week’s 13-7 win over Abilene. The speedy Tascosa skill players have the talent to move the chains with their offense. However, the biggest question mark for the Rebels is in the trenches as they return none of their starting offensive linemen from last year’s team. The line was just good enough in protection to edge Abilene, but the inexperience could be their demise as they face tougher opponents. Led by DBs Brandon White and Ayden Noriega, the Tascosa defense looked stout in week one, and held the Abilene QBs to just six completions out of their 14 attempts.
4A: Waco La Vega (1-0) at Argyle (1-0)
Two of the favorites to win the 4A DI title clash early in the season as No. 3 Waco La Vega travels to play at No. 1 Argyle.
Argyle already faced a tough test in week one against Stephenville and quarterback Bo Hogeboom looked the part, racking up 304 yards and three touchdowns. Part of Hogeboom’s success was spurred by the Eagles’ ability to establish the run game, keeping the Stephenville defense honest. The lone blemish for the Eagles in their season-opening rout was their pass protection as Stephenville was able to put ample pressure on Hogeboom.
La Vega looked as good as advertised as well, making Medina Valley seem like a warm-up game, winning 39-8. The Pirates, who made it to the DI state semifinals last season, tallied 538 yards of total offense in the contest but what really stood out was their always-stout defense. Star linebacker Jared Rogers and company will be put to the test against a potent Argyle offense.
3A: Comanche (0-1) at Breckenridge (1-0)
After making it to the state quarterfinals last season, Comanche suffered a one-sided loss to 34-15 loss to Eastland in week one. Comanche quarterback Trendon Morin struggled in the season-opener, completing just six of his 14 passes. One of the positive takeaways from last week’s loss was running back Kade Mercers’ ability to run the ball up the gut. The two-way star notched 127 rushing yards and both of the Indians’ touchdowns in his opening act.
Breckenridge quarterback Kevin Franco looked sharp in his first game as the signal-caller. However, the Buckaroos will likely try to keep the ball in between the tackles and feed their stable of running backs who accumulated 339 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 43-36 shootout win over Jacksboro.
2A: Goliad (1-0) at Refugio (1-0)
The 2A DI state runner-up Refugio will face 3A DI opponent Goliad, in a clash between south Texas powers. Goliad annihilated Columbus 60-7 in their week one bout and flexed their balanced offense with quarterback Rocky Morris (213 yards, 2 TDs passing) and power back Logan Bland (126 yards, 2 TDs rushing) at the helm.
The Tiger offense will be tasked with penetrating Refugio’s stout defense that shutout Tidehaven 35-0 last week. The Refugio offense is no push over either after the debut of their new offensive scheme — an option-based attack — a dramatic shift from the strong air attack (and in more recent years, balanced power sets) that head coach Jason Herring is used to. The new-look offense will attempt to replicate the success they had in last week’s game when they tallied over 300 yards.
