Valero Alamo Bowl
TCU (10-3) vs. Stanford (9-4)
December 28, 8 p.m.
About TCU
Remember the last time TCU made the trek to San Antonio for the Valero Alamo Bowl? The Horned Frogs provided one of the most exciting finishes in college football history by overcoming a 31-0 halftime deficit with nine straight scoring drives in the final two quarters. This time, TCU enters the bowl game after losing three games in the regular season, including a tough loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game. The team is 10-3 on the season but is 3-3 in its last six games with two losses to the Sooners and a tough 14-7 road loss to Iowa State. The Horned Frogs rank No. 5 in the Big 12 in scoring offense (33.2 ppg), but they rank No. 1 in scoring defense (17.6 ppg). Containing Stanford’s Bryce Love (1,973 yards, 17 TDs) will be key for the defense as TCU looks to improve to 10-5 in bowl games under coach Gary Patterson.
About Stanford
Outside of a blowout loss to USC in Week 2, Stanford is just a few plays away from being in a much different postseason position. The Cardinal lost three games by a combined three points throughout the year and are coming off a 31-28 loss to USC in the Pac-12 championship game. Stanford has won three of its last four games though, including wins over then-No. 9 Washington and then-No. 9 Notre Dame. The Cardinal have a potent run game headlined by the explosive Bryce Love, who is averaging more than 8.3 yards per carry this season. The team is scoring an average of 32 ppg, ranking No. 6 in the Pac-12, while giving up 21.5 ppg – good for second in the conference.
Players to Watch
QB Kenny Hill (TCU) – Hill has struggled at times throughout the year, but he is the most important part of the offense. If Hill is able to get going and take care of the ball, the Horned Frogs will be in good shape. He has thrown for 2,838 yards and 21 touchdowns this season and will look to finish what’s been an up-and-down career on a high note with a bowl win.
RB Bryce Love (Stanford) – Love is by far the most talented player on the Stanford offense and he is the latest in a long line of productive running backs the team has put on display. The Cardinal offense goes as far as Love takes it, which has worked out pretty well throughout the year. The junior was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy before finishing behind Baker Mayfield.
