The Baylor football program has dipped into the local high school coaching scene to add to its staff.

Prior to his time at University, Johnson was the defensive coordinator at Waco Midway, Conroe and Katy Mayde Creek; he was also a position coach at Waco Connally and Magnolia.
Johnson’s departure means that both Waco ISD programs will have new head coaches in 2025 as Waco High recently named Waco Midway assistant coach Esrom Martinez as the Lions new head coach. University has been the far more successful team in the district in recent years and has a good core back, so expect the quality of pool of candidates for this opening to be strong.
Defensive coordinator Charles Foster will serve as the interim head coach during the transition and sources indicate he will be a strong candidates for the permanent role as well.
