We don't need to tell you that Texas is big, and one of the truly remarkable aspects of Texas is its wide-ranging diversity — the Piney Woods out east and the arid mountains out west can feel like they're not on the same planet, let alone in the same state.
And, of course, football in Texas is as big as the Lone Star State itself. And with 254 counties scattered across the state — more than any other state — we wanted to take up the challenge of identifying the best high school football team in each of one.
For each county, we've identified two different superlatives — the best in 2024, and the best since 2019. The former is based on the Dave Campbell's Texas Football staff selection; the latter is based on the DCTF Six-Year Program Rankings, which take into account the six seasons since 2019.
From perennial state champions to under-the-radar contenders, our selections celebrate teams that represent their counties with pride and passion.
So let's hit the road, county by county, and explore the best Texas high school football has to offer.
Note: There are four counties — Hartley, Kenedy, Loving and McMullen — that do not have any schools that play football. Counties with only one high school football team are marked with an asterisk.
